Confederate Vice-President Stephens Civil War Archive

(ALEXANDER HAMILTON STEPHENS), Vice-President of the Confederate States, U.S. Congressman, Governor of Georgia.
Civil War Period Covers Addressed to the Confederate Vice-President. Fabulous archive of 25 Alexander H. Stephens related items, from 1861 to 1865, Good to Very Fine. All of these items are envelopes addressed to Stephens, during the time he was Vice-President of the Confederacy. Some of these covers are stampless, but a few were mailed using Confederate Stamps. All the letters were long ago removed from these covers, but 24 of them have notations on the back in Alexander H. Stephens' handwriting, indicating the subject of the missing letter. Most of the dates are based on the letter, someone having written the date lightly in pencil on most of these covers.
1. February 26, 1861, Milled(geville), GA, to Stephens "Vice President of the Confederate States" at Montgomery, Alabama. Stephens' notation reads: "W.R. Thompson, owner of the Savannah Morning News. Missing flap; small piece missing from lower right bottom. 5. October 1, 1861, to Stephens "Vice President" with no address or postal markings. Stephen's notation: "Hon. H.W. Hilliard - Richmond Oct. 1st /61 - called to take leave of Mr. S. Is about to return to Ala." Yellow envelope, the flap and upper left corner are missing. 6. Two more envelopes with partial Confederate stamps, one with no notation by Stephens. 18-25. Balance of lot. 5 yellow covers, 1 white, 1 brown; one has postmark but no stamp. All have notations by Stephens, some asking for military appointments, the names mentioned include: D.G. Cotting, James Gardner, R.M. Johnston, J. Hendly Smith, and James Johnson.
