Confederate Troops Drive "Yankeys" Across The River
February 11, 1864, Civil War, Confederate, Autograph Letter, From "Camp Near Aring Courthouse", Choice Fine.
One sheet, folded, with writing on four sides, 7.75" x 9.25". In this letter, A. J. Gonda (Gouda?) writes to Mr. J. C. Luke to say that J. C. Luke (apparently Junior) had landed safely and joined his military unit, but that his trunk was lost. This letter reads in part:
".... the boys is all well at this time. Pinchin Webb died the 3 of Feb. last [and] Salmons died awhile before, both of them taken with the numoniy [pneumonia]. J. C. Luke landed safe buy lost his trunk and all he had in it at Weldon. I was glad to here of your elekson [election]. I think the war will be over before you have to cum out agane .... Last Saturday & Sunday we had a very hard little fite. We drive the Yankeys back across the river wher they cum from. We lost 2 killed & 6 wounded in our regiment [but] nobody got hurt in my cumpeny ...."
J. C. Luke lived either in Wilcox County or Irwin County, Georgia. There is another letter in this sale written by him.
