1863 Civil War Mutiny Aboard Union Ships!
March 5, 1863, Navy Department General Order No. 7, Disobedience of Soldiers, Mint.
8.5" x 5.5", 2 pages. Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles, approves the sentences of two men who were accused of concealing "mutiny" from his superiors, "disobedience of orders" and the "inefficiency in the performance of duty". The first of the two men, Master B.G. Pettingill, was found guilty of all three charges and sentenced to be dismissed after serving six months "imprisonment at a hard labor" prison without pay. The second man, Second Assistant Engineer Charles H. Cheesebro, was found not guilty of the first and second charges, but guilty of the third. He will be "suspended from duty for two months... with half-pay."
