Black History
"W.W. Wilbur" Charleston, SC Slave Auctioneer Token

1846, "W.W. Wilbur" Charleston, South Carolina, Slave Auctioneer Token, Struck in Brass, Extremely Fine.
This Slave Auctioneer's Token measures 28 mm and has some old scratches on both sides from actual use. This better variety with, "GOING ONLY AT A PENNY" added to the obverse die, which is quite scarce. Wilbur, who was a Slave Auctioneer, issued tokens in 13 die and metal variations. They are rarely seen in high grade and it is nearly impossible to find one showing the fully struck figure of the auctioneer.
