Isidor Ascheim (1891-1968) was born in Germany in 1891. He immigrated to Israel in 1940 and settled in Jerusalem. During the years 1919-23 he studied under the expressionist Otto Mueller in Breslau. He was also influenced by Erich Heckel of the Brucke (The Bridge) group. In Israel he became a teacher at the renowned Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and was even nominated its director for some time. Over the years he won several honorary prizes such as the Dizingof Prize in 1951, the Jerusalem Prize in 1955. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1956 along with many other exhibitions in Israel and around the world.
Jewish Village is an expressive and geometric image of a small village with crowded and shabby houses. Ascheim's sharp and bold contours brings to mind Janco's expressive style.
