Shaul Shats was born in 1944 in Kibbutz Sarid, Israel. During 1965-67 he studied at Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. Several years later he became an art teacher in Bezalel. He lives and works in Jerusalem.
Shats paints from the hill of Armon Hanaziv in old Jerusalem facing the city, its walls and neighboring village of Siloah, while his back is to the desert. He relates to the breathtaking view around him and the images appearing in his works are connected with this vision. For Shats Jerusalem is the heart of the world and forms a geographical boundary between desert and settlement, between barbarism and civilization. The desert is a desolate wilderness, thus he does not relate directly to it in his work, even though he is affected by its presence and proximity. Although Shats' landscapes relate to actual landmarks, they are very personal with their inspiration lying deep within the artist personality.
Shats sees himself as a religious painter and he was so even before he changed his way of life and became observant. In his opinion, religious painting is a frequent phenomenon and a much more natural one than we realize. Religious painting does not necessarily present religious scenes or symbols. Perhaps the overlap between his world view and his creativity is that which generates Shats personal and beautiful "hand-writing".
Shats had one-man shows in leading galleries in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. His works are in the collections of the Israel Museum (Jerusalem), the Tel Aviv Museum and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam).
