1766 Massachusetts Governor William Shirley Signed Document
WILLIAM SHIRLEY, Governor of The Bahamas and Colonial Governor of Massachusetts.
Manuscript Document Signed "W Shirley," in brown ink on watermarked, fine-laid paper, November 5 1766, [Nassau] Bahamas, Very Fine. Signed at bottom, in brown ink, with a flourish. Shirley signed this document as the governor of the Bahamas, and the embossed seal of the Bahamas is noticeable at the top left. Shirley Directs Surveyor General John Pratt to measure and layout "unto John Cooper of New Providence... a Tract of Land situate to the Southwest and Westward of Land heretofore granted to Alexander Marshall, containing two hundred acres." Cooper was a merchant and likely a slaveowner based out of Charleston, S.C. Light toning, mild foxing, with some minor edge splits at folds. Includes certificate of authenticity.
