American Artist John Trumbull's Letter During the War of 1812
JOHN TRUMBULL, American Artist from the American Revolutionary War era.
Autograph Letter Signed, "Mr. Trumbull", in the third person, in brown ink, on a 5.5" x 7.5" notesheet, dated June 22, 1813, Choice Extremely Fine. Addressed to Lord Sidmouth, and attached to an Autograph Draft of notes, 9" x 7", concerning a conversation the two shared. The ALS requests a meeting with Sidmouth; the page of notes concerning the War of 1812 is written on the reverse of a note from Sidmouth granting the meeting, dated June 24, 1813. The documents were tipped together at an early date. Format varies. The notes, likely part of a larger draft of a letter written by Trumbull after the meeting with Sidmouth, are quite interesting, beginning "conversation turned on the destruction of small towns on the Chesapeake. I expressed my high satisfaction that the officers & troops in Canada, instead of retaliating the threats... had conducted the war with humanity & restrained the savages in a great degree from their usual habits of indiscriminate destruction & burning..." Both documents have usual folds and are in fine shape with no edge splits or foxing.
John Trumbull, the artist, served in the Revolution, then studied in London with Benjamin West, under whose tutelage he painted the "Battle of Bunker's Hill" and the "Death of General Montgomery in the Attack of Quebec." Many of his paintings had the most famous and historic Revolutionary War subjects and George Washington sat for him a number of times. He also painted the four Revolutionary War mural scenes which today still decorate the Rotunda of the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
