1805 Connecticut Military Commission Signed by "Jon Trumbull"

JONATHAN TRUMBULL, JR., Son of "Brother Jonathon" Governor of Connecticut (1797-1809).
Partially Printed Document Signed "Jon:a Trumbull," Hartford, CT, May 15, 1805, 7.75" x 13.75", Choice Very Fine. Document has a 1" age mark at center but has been well-preserved. Has an absolutely gorgeous seal on the left side, raised, with original red ink still visible. Seal is 4" in diameter. Appoints Daniel Hayden Jr. as a Captain in the Connecticut militia.



Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. (1740-1809), "Brother Jonathon" Trumbull's son, had a very illustrious career as an early American statesman--not to be confused with his younger brother, John Trumbull, the famous painter of the American Revolution! Jonathan, Jr., was Governor of Connecticut from 1797-1809. (His father was Colonial Governor of Connecticut from 1769-83). Jonathan, Jr. was the first Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury from 1778 until 1779. He worked as a personal secretary on President Washington's staff from 1781 until 1783. A member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1789 until 1795, during which period from 1791 to 1793, he held the position of Speaker of the House. From 1795 until 1796, Jonathan, Jr. represented Connecticut as a U.S. Senator.
