Colonial America
1740 Dated Colonial American Estate Documents
April 16 & 22, 1740, Two Manuscript Documents Relating to the Estate of the late John Scidmore, Very Fine.
This original 1740 item is actually two documents written on opposite sides of the same sheet of paper, relating to the sale of the Huntington, New York property of the late John Scidmore. The April 16th document, which is lightly written, is a bond under which Joseph Scidmore agrees to pay Thomas Scidmore (both residing in Huntington, NY), "one hundred pounds current money of the colony." The other side of this document announces an auction of the estate of John Scidmore, deceased. This document reads, in full (spelling errors retained):
"An advertisement. This is to give notice of a publick venden in Huntington - at the house of Sarah Scidmore, the widder of John Scidmore, Desees. These are to be sold the first munday in may next. Ensuing Cattle and Sheep and housen goods and other things. April ye 22th 1740."
This original 5" x 8" document is highly unusual and quite rare. Aside from a light stain in the top half, this document is in nice condition.
