In 17th Century "Court Dress" Wood Printing Block

c. 1700s, Hand Engraved Wooden Printing Block, with Portraits of a Man and a Woman in the Formal Dress of the 1600's, Choice Extremely Fine.
This exquisite example of 1700s woodblock print hand-engraving, measuring 2" x 4," consists of chest up portraits of a man and woman in formal dress of the 1600s. The woman is wearing a Period hat with a feather in the top, a large, elaborate diamond-shaped collar, and a necklace with a cross-shaped emblem. The man is wearing a Period wide-rimmed hat with a feather on the side, a coverlet from his neck to his shoulders, long hair, a mustache and pointed goatee. Both the man and woman are wearing the same emblem -- a cross inside a diamond, with a circle at each of the four points. The printing surface of this rare printing block is in excellent condition, with a small .5" crack between the two figures at the bottom edge. Although we have not be able to determine the use of this specific print, a little research may reveal the identity of this couple, who are most probably of European nobility.
