Governor Trumbull Publishes Book on Death of Daughter
1777, Pamphlet, "A Sermon (on) ...the Untimely Death of Mrs. Faith Huntington," by Solomon Williams, Printed by Her Father, Governor John Trumbull, CT, Very Choice Extremely Fine.
Evans 15712; Sabin 104363; Trumbull 1688. The full title of this 28-page pamphlet is: "A Sermon Delivered In The First Society In Lebanon, December 3, 1775. The Next Lord's Day, After The News Of The Untimely Death Of Mrs. Faith Huntington, Daughter Of The Honorable Governor Trumbull, And Wife Of Colonel Jedediah Huntington." The sermon was written by Solomon Williams, Late Pastor of the First Church in Lebanon, and was published by order of the Governor in 1777 at Norwich, CT. This pamphlet measures 7" x 4.5" and is bound by thread along the left edge. Col. Jedediah Huntington was a Brigadier general and a friend of George Washington. His wife had visited him in camp at Roxbury, MA in the early days of the Revolutionary War. The scenes of war affected her sensitive mind, and she became deranged and died on November 24, 1775. The author, Rev. Williams, died before his sermon was printed. He alludes to Mrs. Huntington's madness, but does not specifically say that she was a witness to the Battle of Bunker Hill. Very Scarce. There is a damp stain affecting the front cover and first page, otherwise this pamphlet is complete and in excellent condition.
