Revolutionary War Advance Pay To Officers Certificate

April 26, 1779, Revolutionary War Era, Colonial Massachusetts Treasury Certificate, with Pine Tree Vignette, Anderson MA-18, About Extremely Fine.
This handsome Treasury Certificate from the "State of Massachusetts Bay" has a vignette of a pine tree circled by a snake in the upper left corner. It was issued in the amount of 75 pounds and was payable by January 1, 1780 at 6% interest. This 7.25" x 9.25" certificate, with full selvage, is framed with woodcut designs on three sides, the bottom frame design consisting of 2 ribbons with letters inside spelling out "Death To Counterfeit This." A box printed in the right margin indicates the purpose of this certificate "Advance Pay to Officers, first Moiety." The word "moiety" means a half or a portion of something, so this certificate is the first portion or first half of the officers' advance pay. H. Gardner has signed this document as Treasurer, and Stephen Minot and J. Mascarene have signed for the Committee. This certificate is in very nice condition, with some light browning around the upper right margin, and .5" fold splits at the top and bottom margins near the right end. There is some later, but very old writing in the lower margin. This is a wonderful relic of the American Revolutionary War.
