1864 Lithograph of General Gage by Max Rosenthal

"THE DAWN OF LIBERTY," by Max Rosenthal, Choice Extremely Fine.
Lithograph, 18" x 23" with wide margins. Uncolored. Published by William Smith, Philadelphia, PA., 1864. An early American depiction, featuring a scene c. 1775 with British Gen. Gage, two uniformed British soldiers, a servant tending to the fireplace, and American soldiers meeting with him in his parlor, apparently having presented the General with a written petition. Printed at the bottom: "THE DAWN OF LIBERTY General Gage said - The very children here draw in a love of liberty with the air they breathe - You may go my brave boyes, and be assured if my troops trouble you again they shall be punished." A large, magnificent example.
