"The Death of General Washington" Textile

c. 1800, Burgundy and White American Cotton Kerchief, "The Death of General Washington", Choice Very Fine.
17.75" x 19.75." Made in Philadelphia by Pember & Luzarder, shortly after Washington's death, after an engraving by Amos Doolittle, printed in deep burgundy on off-white cloth. It depicts Washington on his deathbed attended by Doctors Craik and Dick, as Martha Washington sits at the foot of his bed. Six cartouches around the scene lavish praise on Washington. Overall, the condition is excellent for a textile of this type and period. There are a few small holes and stains on the main image, but they do not distract significantly. The lower right corner has a reinforcement on the back that covers some minor holes. Of special note is a black-stitched name of a previous owner: "Sarah * A * W", directly below the central image! This is an extremely rare textile--only the fourth that we know of in the last 25 years. It is listed as No. 21 in "Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present."
