Exceedingly Rare "George Washington" Broadside
c. 1814, George Washington Hand-colored Commemorative Broadside: "A Summary of the Principal Events of the Life of the Illustrious General George Washington Commander in Chief of the American Forces During the Revolutionary War and the First President of the United States," Choice Very Fine.
This original, highly important, George Washington Memorial Broadside measures 23.5" x 19" and was printed by "Packard & Van Benthuysen" of Albany, New York. It contains a very flattering, year by year account of the life of George Washington. It is printed in five separate columns with Hand-colored toning and is enhanced with beautiful printer's decorative borders. It is signed by the printer with a dedication that reads, "Is Respectively Inscribed to the American Public by the Publishers". This Broadside is undated but we have found a Library reference dating the publication to 1814. It seems this wonderful Broadside was published to accompany a large size Print of Washington, but we can find no reference or record of any such print by Packard & Van Benthuysen in any Library or Collection. This very rare, early 19th century Broadside is in excellent condition with some light folds, some trivial small spots of toning and minor edge wear, with the only significant item being a small amount of loss at the lower right hand extreme corner tip, just affecting half of the printer's outer border design only. This Broadside is very attractive and will display beautifully. It is printed on high quality, heavy rag content paper. This is not a reproduction, reprint or later copy.
