c. 1897, Convention Badge, "A. C. Dodge, President - 1895-'96-'97," around portrait of Dodge wearing long goatee, Extremely Fine.
This handsome Convention Badge features a photographic portrait of A. C. Dodge, in a silver-plated frame consisting of an oak wreath with a spread winged eagle above, holding the American flag and an olive branch. All of this is suspended from a pinback bar, which is missing its paper insert. Both the bar and frame are marked with the name of the manufacturer, Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, NJ. The badge with bar measures 3.5" x 2.5." An internet search turned up an A. C. Dodge who was Vice-President of Cary Seminary in Oakfield, NY in 1889 (though never president), and an A. C. Dodge who ran the A. C. Dodge Lumber Company in Wisconsin, and was a member of the state assembly during 1899-1901. This badge might refer to the latter A. C. Dodge, perhaps as President of a lumber association. More research is certainly needed. This badge is in excellent condition, the metal parts having toned somewhat darkly.
