Lancaster Co., PA Painted Dower Chest dated 1805, attributed to the Embroidery artist. Front panel with name Salme Bahrt and dated 1805. Blue with ivory ground panel and having tulip, vines, beaded scrolls, floral and geometric motifs with a whimsical face sniffing a flower executed inside the letter B in last name. Molded lid, dovetailed case, molded base with ogee bracket feet, interior with wrought iron strap hinges, stepped and molded lid on till and replaced lock and escutcheon. This chest is pictured in 'The Pennsylvania German Decorated Chest' by Monroe H. Fabian, page 152 and on front cover of 'Early Homes' magazine Fall/Winter 2006. Provenance: H & R Sandor, Inc. with the original purchase receipt dated Dec. 2, 1970 and stating that "This chest was removed by us from Chesterton house, the Southampton Estate of the late Henry Francis du Pont." A copy of Fabian's book and magazine will accompany this chest, 22-1/2" h. x 52" w. x 22-1/4" d., (substantial paint loss on lid, normal wear and losses).
