A bamboo cane belonging to Charlie Chaplin. Together with a press cutting about Robert Smales, a shoemaker in Tyne and Wear, who states that he repaired Chaplin's boots in Sunderland, when he was performing at a local music hall. Chaplin forgot his cane at the cobbler's and never returned to claim it. Together with a letter from a relation of Mr. Smales recounting the same story. Cane: 25 1/4" with a portion of the end broken off. 1889-1977. Sale History: Christie's South Kensington, September 1999.
