Born Eric Weisz in 1874, Harry Houdini became a professional magician in 1893. He took the name "Houdini" having been heavily influenced by French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. Later in life, he claimed that "Harry" was in tribute to the magician Harry Kellar who Houdini greatly admired. At first, Houdini's magic career resulted in little success. He performed in dime museums and sideshows. Prior to developing his escape acts that were powerfully promoted by his new manager Martin Beck in 1899, his routines were more in line with the work of other magicians. This flower pot trick is believed to be an important artifact from Houdini's early career, before he performed his extraordinary escapes. Sale History: EAC Gallery, February 2000
