Signed Beatles Trademark Document

View Catalog

Description

Beatles trademark document signed by all four members of The Beatles, and dated November 23, 1964, in the City of London. It authorizes "The Beatles" name to be registered and used by the group in the U.S., and is attached and bound along with a title page and sworn statement from the notary public who witnessed the signing. The document reads (in part): "1. We carry on business jointly as entertainers under the group name of 'The Beatles'. 2. We have duly appointed NEMS Enterprises Limited...to manage our said business affairs throughout the world. 3. The said NEMS Enterprises Limited is entitled to register the name "The Beatles" in the United States of America and its territories for the purposes of a service mark." Signed in gorgeous, dark blue fountain ink at the foot of the page by all four band members : George Harrison, Ringo Starr (as Richard Starkey), Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The document is also accompanied with a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert and historian Frank Caiazzo. This historic document was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in November of 1964, under a Seven-Year Trademark authorization. Incredibly, up until this time, anyone in the U.S. could have registered the name "The Beatles", enabling them to reap any financial rewards from it. In fact, from the very first day of the British Invasion some nine months prior (Feb 1964 - The Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show) up until the date of this document, the name "The Beatles" was not protected by U.S. trademark law. Upon the expiration of the trademark in 1971, this document was scheduled to be destroyed, or "cancelled section 8", since The Beatles had broken up by then and the terms were not renewed.
