Subtitle: Additional Information:re 1876 Convention and loss of black voting rights Description:Escaped slave at age twenty, Douglass continued to work feverishly to emancipate other slaves. As a major Stationmaster on the Underground Railroad he directly helped hundreds on their way to freedom. Renowned for his eloquence, he lectured throughout the US and England on the brutality and immorality of slavery. He helped recruit African American troops for the Union Army, and his personal relationship with Lincoln helped persuade the President to make emancipation a cause of the Civil War. Autograph letter signed, one page, 7" x 10'" on lined notebook paper. In part: "Washington D.C. June 5th, 1876, Dear Sir: I am coming to Cincinnati solely to attend the National Republican Convention. I have no purpose to lecture in Cincinnati at the time of the convention. Respectfully Yours." Signed in black ink, "Frederick Douglass." The U.S. presidential election of 1876 was perhaps the most disputed and intense presidential election in American history. Samuel J. Tilden of New York defeated Ohio's Rutherford Hayes in the popular vote, and had 184 electoral votes to Hayes' 165, with 20 votes yet uncounted. These 20 electoral votes were in dispute: in three states (Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina) each party reported its candidate had won the state, while in Oregon one elector was declared illegal and replaced. The votes were ultimately awarded to Hayes after a bitter electoral dispute. Many historians believe that an informal deal was struck to resolve the dispute. In return for Southern acquiescence in Hayes' election, the Republicans agreed to withdraw federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction. The rights that Douglas had fought for had been granted to blacks after the Civil War but these could no longer be protected in the southern states. This deal became known as the Compromise of 1877. The Compromise effectively pushed African-Americans out of power in the government; soon after the compromise, African-Americans were barred from voting by poll taxes and grandfather clauses.A few month after the convention, Douglass who had worked so hard for over a decade for the Republican party, was finally rewarded with a political post, of marshal for Washington, D.C. This was controversial, and Douglass was criticized for accepting his post after the Republicans' betrayal of their black supporters, but he saw the appointment as simply another milestone for his people. In any case, Douglass did speak out against the Republicans for abandoning southern blacks to the discriminatory practices of the South. In his job as a U.S. marshal he oversaw the criminal justice system in the nation's capital, and had a large staff of employees. Light aging along with a few mailing folds, otherwise in very good condition. ![]() page for more information about Autographs our Guarantee and Our Company.
