Subtitle: Description:Union Major General of Calvary . Civil War Date Autograph Letter Signed. Dated April 19, 1863 as commander 3rd Division, 20th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. Tennessee had been high on Lincoln's list of military priorities since the beginning of the war. Grant's river war in 1862 gained control of west Tennessee, however, Buell failed to liberate east Tennessee. Conf Gen. Braxton Bragg was able to launch his invasion of Kentucky from Chattanooga. Rosecrans replaced Buell and began to move against Bragg but was stopped at Stone's River near Murfreesboro Dec. 31- Jan. 2, 1863. The Union line was in disarray, Bragg hurled his men against the divisions of Sheridan and Negley, Three times in dense masses the enemy charged on these divisions, and three times were they repulsed. Sheridan's troops having now exhausted their ammunition-and nearly all his horses killed--then gave way, after over four hours of some of the hottest fighting of the battle. Nearly all his artillery was saved, drawn by his men through the cedars. On arriving at the Murfreesboro pike, Sheridan reformed his command in an open space. Sheridan reformed the Union lines that had almost broke on Bragg's counterattack and saved the day for the Union army. Sheridan success at Stone's River earned him a promotion to major General in March 1863. Sheridan writes barely 3 weeks after that promotion, still at Murfreesboro pike, where he established his command to stop Bragg. Entirely in his hand, a proud Sheridan writes : "Headqus 3 Divs. 20 army corps Murfreesboro/ April 19 1863 - / Mr L J List, St Louis/ I was appointed as Brig General July 1st 1863 & a Major General Dec. 31st 1862./ Very respectfully/ yours / P. H. Sheridan/ Maryland/ US Vol". Of the major battles of the Civil War, the Battle of Stones River, aka the Battle of Murfreesboro, had the highest percentage of casualties on both sides. The Union army's repulse of two Confederate attacks was a boost to U.S. morale after the defeat at Federicksburg. This is only the second Sheridan war date letter we have had in the past 15 years. ![]() page for more information about Autographs our Guarantee and Our Company.
