maple, deeply carved throughout with predominant themes evoking Thomas Jefferson and the University of Virginia, shown are Jefferson's Tomb and UVA's famed Rotunda, secondary carvings include a Masonic compass, chain, horseshoe, basket, star, fish, running dogs and leaves, carved inscriptions reading "University of Virginia Burnt Sunday Oct 27 1895," "Jefferson's Tomb C.C. Broward," "Thos. Jefferson of Va Born Apr 2, 1743 was President USA 1801 to 1809," "Wrote Declaration of Independence Founder of University VA 1819," "Died July 4 1826 This Cane Was Cut Near Jeffersons Tomb," "Jeffersons Dying Words I Resign My Spirit To God My Daughter To My Country."
