Antique North Carolina Folk Art Cane,
ca. mid-19th c., painted black wood, a carved green snake entwined around shaft, owner's name and location - John Worsham / Caswell Co., N.C. - deeply carved in bold letters in spiral. A popular form enhanced by geographic and family identification. Two Caswell County men having this name have been found. The first, John C. Worsham, was born there in 1815. The second fellow, John D., enlisted in Co. "C", 13th NC Volunteers on June 28, 1861. He served in the Confederate army until paroled shortly after the surrender at Appomattox. These men were probably father and son, with the cane being made by the latter sometime after the Civil War. 38" Condition reportVestiges of white paint within lettering, overall surface wear from use, green paint darkened to nearly black.
