American School, British Salvo, 19th c.,
watercolor, unsigned, a fine War of 1812 maritime scene in which an American privateer under full sail is being fired upon by two British men-of-war, mounted to secondary sheet with two hinges. The fledgling United States supplemented its regular navy with armed vessels from the private sector. Small, sleek ships such as this were quite fast and played hell with British commerce on the high seas. 5" x 7.75"

Expected light aging, small ink smear on privateer's foresail.
