Oscar Soellner (IL, 1890-1952), Choke Hold,
oil on canvas (relined), unsigned, retains paper Chicago Galleries Association exhibition label, study of a tangled tree trunk against a dramatic colored ground, housed in a later period-appropriate gilt wood frame; Oscar Daniel Soellner was primarily a self-taught artist, studying art books on his own and later enrolled in formal classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. He divided his time between that of a commercial artist in the city and a more rustic and fulfilling life in the country. He and his family spent many summers and vacations in the artist's colony of Grand Detour, Illinois, where he enjoyed painting in the outdoors. He exhibited in Chicago and her environs, including a long run at the Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago off and on from 1923 until 1950. His greatest achievement was the exhibition of his painting, "A House at Grand Detour," in the annual exhibition of the National Academy of Design in 1929. This accolade further solidified his reputation in his own backyard, and he continued to paint the American Scene until his death in 1952. Letter of authentication provided by Ruth S. Marr, daughter of Oscar Soellner. SS 23.5" x 29.5"; DOA 32" x 38"
