Henri Schaep (Dutch,1826-1870), At Neptune's Mercy
oil on canvas, signed lower right "H. Schaep", a dismasted vessel is tossed about a stormy sea while four distressed sailors cling to wreckage that has been swept overboard. Above this unfolding drama, a hovering gull and breaking clouds suggest that somehow the men will survive. In original wooden fame. Henri Adolph Shaep, although a noted marine painter, also recorded mid-19th c. village life in the Netherlands and Belgium. SS 27.5" 40.75"; DOA 33" x 46"
