Gustave Simoni (Italian, 1846 - 1926), Taverna,
watercolor, signed lower left "G. Simoni / Roma 1901", wine, pipes, song and story are appropriately evident in this genre scene depicting seven Italian peasants relaxing in their favorite watering hole. The realistic treatment of the subject allows this painting to serve as a true snapshot into the past. Behind glass in an ornate gilt and composition frame stamped with what appears to be a City of Rome tax stamp dated March 22, 1901. Simoni was prolific in both oil and watercolor, giving special attention to everyday people. In addition to painting scenes from his native Italy, Simoni documented the Islamic world of North Africa.
