Very Rare Antique University of Virginia Book,
Early History of the University of Virginia, as Contained in the Letters of Thomas Jefferson and Joseph C. Cabell, Hitherto Unpublished..., edited by N. F. Cabell, (Richmond: J. W. Randolph, 1856), 528 pp, quarto (9.5" x 6"), brown cloth, front free endpaper inscribed in pencil "A. S. Pendleton from N. F. Cabell", The recipient, Alexander S. Pendleton, known as "Sandie" was an 1860 UVA graduate who became Stonewall Jackson's aide during the Civil War. Pendleton, a well-liked young officer, was killed in late 1864. A listing of books published by Randolph is tipped to the inside of each cover. Many of the titles reflect the sectional crisis facing the nation at the time of publication. Originals of this book seem to reside only in institutions. A photocopy is commercially available for nearly $200. Estate Collection of Francis E. Chaney (Living) Hillsborough, NC.
