Egypt, Roman Period, c.2nd Century AD. A limestone magical stela of Bes. He is depicted frontal, with leonine-features and a corpulent naked body. He subdues a serpent with his left hand, while brandishing a sword overhead in front of his feathered headdress. Small areas of minor restoration.. H: 9". Bes figures were believed to protect individuals from all evils, seen and unseen, and became powerful averters of all dangers, symbolized by the serpent he is about to dispatch with his sword.
