Noel Le Mire (French, 1724-1801): [Le General Washington Ne Quid Detrimenti Capiat Res Publica], circa 1780, after Louis Jean-Baptiste Le Paon (French, 1738-1785), after Charles Wilson Peale (American, 1741-1827), Le Paon elaborated on Peale's original by keeping the basic pose but adding elements such as the tent, horse and attendant, engraving and etching on laid paper, page 20-1/8 x 14-1/2 in.; [stains, handling grime, paper tape verso]; "Conclusion de la Campagne Liberte de 1781 en Virginie…To His Excellency General Washington this likeness of his friend the Marquess de La Fayette, is humbly dedicated, by Le Mire", after Louis Jean-Baptiste Le Paon, engraving on laid paper, page 20 x 14-3/8 in., [modern silver gilt and gold wash frame with eglomisé mat]. [Test cleaning upper right corner, 1-1/2 in. tear at top, retouch and abrasions on mat]. Both with foxing, tipped onto black backing, toning, margins trimmed.
