marked "Maison de…Chevallier…Paris", inscription on interior "Gov. Jno. L. Manning to Gen'l G.T. Beauregard/Sept…", in working order, 6-1/4 in. Leather on case and binoculars with scuffs, chips and several tears. Provenance: A North Carolina Private Collection Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893) was the Confederate General who successfully defended both Charleston, in the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861, and Richmond in June, 1864. John Laurence Manning (1816-1889) was Governor of South Carolina, 1852-1854.
