Specifications:
570hp, 540 ft/lbs of torque, 350 cu. in. Chevrolet overhead valve V8 engine, custom built Phoenix automatic transmission, front and rear independent coil-spring suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Wheelbase: 141"
Daimler was first associated with England's Royal Family when, in 1898, the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, was given a ride in a Daimler. From then, every British monarch from Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth II has used a Daimler limousine. A Daimler limousine was the Queen Mother's favorite automobile, and the DS 420 limousine will forever be remembered as leading the funeral procession of Princess Diana.
In keeping with this legacy, the 1985 Daimler DS 420 Limousine offered here was originally produced in 1985 by appointment from HRH Queen Elizabeth II. As one of only two four-door saloons intended for Royal use in North America, this particular example has been modified for U.S. requirements, including conversion to left-hand drive, along with modifications to the emission-control system.
To improve power and serviceability in North America, the original Jaguar XK inline-six engine has been recently professionally replaced by a new 350 cubic-inch Chevrolet powerplant, which has been tested on a dynamometer and found to produce 570hp and 540 ft-lbs of torque. Additional recent upgrades include a full entertainment system with fold-down LCD screens in the front and rear compartments as well as a GPS navigation system.
The elegant, swept-back steel body is handmade and finished in a handsome non-metallic dark blue. Accenting these timeless lines are the requisite whitewall tires and trademark fluted radiator grille. The interior features grey leather upholstery, double-row seating and two pull-down jump seats. As expected, amenities include a full bar complete with original crystal decanters and accessories, electric-powered glass partition and two-way intercom between fore and aft sections of the passenger cabin.
Originally, intended as a people mover only, as a second car would be used to carry luggage, this Daimler was not originally built with a rear trunk. In its latest ownership, a traditional style trunk was custom fabricated to occupy this void.
The ultimate limousine, and one of only 4116 produced over 24 years, this Daimler DS 420 Limousine represents a rare combination of elegance, sophistication, modernity and power. Over $65,000 has been spent on the car since its current owner acquired the Daimler in 2004. Outstanding in every regard – for those formal occasions, or as unique executive transportation, this Daimler is ready to take its rightful place as the flagship of its new owner.
