Description
The Collection of Mr. Robert F. Snodgrass, Jr.
Specifications:
55bhp, 847cc four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, competition springs and shocks, front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 78.75"
Enjoying a wide cult following throughout Europe among young lead-footed drivers, Carlo Abarth's Fiat conversions were tremendously successful in competition and helped him market a wide array of aftermarket parts. Abarth's first Fiat 600-bodied car appeared in 1956 and was subsequently offered as a kit conversion to keep up with surging popular demand. As Fiat introduced the 767cc-engined 600D in late 1960, Abarth increased its displacement to 847cc and with various engine modifications, top speed approached 90 miles per hour. With its added front radiator, sportier suspension, front disc brakes and numerous cosmetic Abarth add-ons, these 850 TCs (Turismo Competizione) were built to meet homologation requirements for racing and in 1963 won the Nรผrburgring event, thenceforth nicknaming all 55-horsepower versions in that race's honor. All told, the Abarth 850TC won seven straight manufacturer's championships and took three European Challenge Touring Class victories.
The Snodgrass Collection's 850TC Nรผrburgring was purchased from noted expert and Porsche restorer Jerry Sutterfield before seeing track time in Homestead with Mr. Snodgrass behind the wheel. Now showing 23,600 miles, it remains in excellent condition, finished in red and white with a typical Abarth checkered roof pattern. As a track-proven 'berlina', it shows only minor expected cosmetic imperfections. The sparse purpose-built interior, complete with Jaeger-Abarth gauges and correct Abarth badges, is race-ready with a roll cage and Cobra racing seats with four-point harnesses. The caliper hinges that keep the engine lid open reveal a four-cylinder, Webber-carbureted engine that, along with the undercarriage, is very clean, free of dirt and grime and well maintained. Eligible for future racing events, it is fitted with an optional front radiator and Campagnolo wheels to complement the spare wheel and tire inside the front compartment.
Despite its size, the tiny 850 TC was a tremendously successful competition car, unmistakable from its Scorpion badges to the aggressive exhaust note. While it was intended as an affordable racer for the 'everyman', it continues to offer unparalleled thrills and Italian character at a very reasonable price point.
