Jefferson Davis Signs a Letter as Secretary of War, 1855 JEFFERSON DAVIS, President of the Confederate States of America. Manuscript Letter Signed, “Jeffers. Davis” as Secretary of War, on fine-laid paper, July 10, 1855, War Department, Washington, D.C., 8.5” x 7.2”, Choice Very Fine. Addressed to the “Hon. C. Cushing, Attorney General,” Davis writes in regards to West Point: “I request your opinion of the relation of the Articles of War to the cadets of the Military Academy - difficulties sometimes arise in regard to Articles 9-46-67-83, and, in fact, all the articles where officers are distinguished from non-commissioned officers and soldiers.” Crisp, sharp writing; Davis’ signature is over 3” long, and the paper is in terrific condition.
