FREDERICK, LORD NORTH, British Prime Minister during the American Revolution. Autograph Letter Signed in the third person, August 21, 1783, no place, 9.25” x 7.25”, Fine. An interesting letter to Mr. Blackburn: “Lord North returns Mr. Blackburn a thousand thanks for his Turtle, which he desires him to send to his house in Lower Grosvenor Street....” Written on laid paper watermarked with a large crown and “G R” below. Some soiling, primarily to integral address leaf. As prime minister under George III (1770-82), North supported the American stamp tax and Townshend’s tea duty. His stern response to the Boston Tea Party helped unite the colonists against England. The laws adopted by the British parliament under his leadership in 1774, which limited the political freedoms of the colonists, became known as the Intolerable Acts and triggered the First Continental Congress that year.
