19th Century Historical Figures JOHN SHERMAN, JOSIAH G. HOLLAND, M.R. WAITE, & MATTHEW C. BUTLER. Lot of 4 signatures by historical figures from the 19th century, all Fine-Very Fine. 1. Cut Paper Signed, “John Sherman,” key author of the “Sherman Anti-Trust Act” of the late 1800s, 4” signature in pencil on mounted paper. 2. Autograph Letter Signed, “J.G. Holland” (editor and co-founder of Scribner’s), in ink, August 8, 1870, 7.9” x 4.8” sheet. Some minor stains and show-through from mounting traces on verso. 3. Cut Paper Signed, “M.R. Waite - Chief Justice / Sup. Ct. U.S.” [Supreme Court] in ink on one side of a 3.5” x 5” sheet; 4. the other side is also Signed, “M.C. Butler” in ink (Matthew C. Butler, Confederate General from the Civil War). 5. Lot also includes a torn paper note, written in pencil and dated July 11, ’6(?), by a combatant in the Battle of Gettysburg, in part: “I passd [sic] through the valley of Gettysburg unharmed though my clothing was perforated with bullets....” Signed by “J.E.
