Colonial America
Hand carved Woodblock & Print of a Man Being Burned at the Stake

c. 1670, Original Woodblock For printing an image in a publication, of a Man Being Burned at the Stake, Lot of 2, New England, Choice Extremely Fine.
3.25” x 2.5” x 1”-thick woodblock and matching 3.25” x 2.5” uncolored modern print impression from the block, matted to 11” x 8.5.” A strikingly detailed example of an illustration that would have accompanied a traditional or popular tale from the 17th centuryŃpossibly an early version of “Cock Robin’s Death and Funeral,” published in Boston, MA. (Similar woodcut prints are found in a copy of the book in the Library of Congress. Examples on back of print.) This original block and print shows the skilled craftsmanship of a bygone art. The woodblock is stained black from usage, and has a warp split from age, but is still capable of printing sharp images. (2 items)
