American Revolution
Revolutionary War Spontoon Head, Fine.
Rough-hewn 5.5” “spade” shaped blade with forge marks in the iron surface, 9.25” overall length. Nice brown and gray patina to surfaces. Handforged haft curves around in a conical shape, and has a small hole where the wooden shaft would have been attached. A rare early American Spontoon head, from the Revolutionary War era. Neumann notes, on p. 248: “Although the infantryman’s spear or ‘pike’ was abandoned in Europe by 1700, many commissioned officers on both sides continued to carry spontoons” through the American Revolutionary War. (“Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution.”)
