American Revolution
Revolutionary War Spontoon Head, Fine. Rough-hewn 5.5” “spade” shaped blade with forge marks in the iron surface, 9.25” overall length. Nice brown and gray patina to surfaces. Handforged haft curves around in a conical shape, and has a small hole where the wooden shaft would have been attached. A rare early American Spontoon head, from the Revolutionary War era. Neumann notes, on p. 248: “Although the infantryman’s spear or ‘pike’ was abandoned in Europe by 1700, many commissioned officers on both sides continued to carry spontoons” through the American Revolutionary War.
