American Revolution
1783, Order to Pay Continental Soldier. Document Signed, “William Mosely,” partially-printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 page, 8.5” x 6.5,” Hartford, October 24, 1783. Some slight wear at folds, otherwise Choice Very Fine. Here the state of Connecticut pays a soldier for his service. “Please to secure to Ozias Hanford the Payment of Eleven pounds five shillings and ten pence - being the Balance found due to him for Service in the Continental Army, in 1780 Agreeable to Act of Assembly - and Charge the State...[signed in type] JOHN LAWRENCE, Esq.; Treasurer.” Getting paid in the Continental Army was never easy; it took Hanford, apparently, three years to receive his money. How much a soldier drew monthly depended on when he enlisted, where he enlisted, what he did, his rank of course - and whether there was any cash on hand to pay him, which there usually was not.
