American Revolution
Revolutionary War “Commodity” Treasury Bond January 1, 1780, Massachusetts Bay Treasury Certificate, Payable in Commodities, £166, Anderson MA-21, Very Choice Extremely Fine. Measures a large 5.75” x 10.25”. A highly important issue, one of the first “Commodity” based bonds (and a foreshadowing of our present day Commodity trades). Inflation was so rampant at this juncture, the State was forced to tie the value of actual goods to a fixed price. Standard Colonial Era commodities such as; Beef, sheep’s wool, sole leather and corn are priced within the text. Boldly signed at the bottom left by Thomas Dawes and Richard Cranch. Multiple endorsements on the back show early partial interest payments at 6% per year. Superior in appearance with sharp printing with extremely nice eye appeal.
