This rare piece of ephemera not mentioned in any golf references consulted. The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. The book relates tales of the Old Course during a time when there were relatively few golfers and is of great interest because it gives one of the few first-hand accounts of how the course was played in those early days. Light creases including on spine and corners (2½" to bottom front cover), some bubbling to covers, slight soiling, thin and short black ink mark on front cover margin; occasional tiny black dots at front and back; very good or better. Seldom seen in better condition and in original binding state.
