c. 1783, “St. Lucia in the West Indies taken Possession of by Admiral Barrington Monsieur de Micoud and the Inhabitants having Capitulated the 30th of December 1778 being the day after Count D’Estaign left the Island much disconcerted,” Choice Extremely Fine. 15” x 9.25”. A beautiful engraving that shows several ships of war anchored off the coast of St. Lucia in the Virgin Islands. Engraved for Barnard’s “New Complete Authentic History of England” (with numerous superlatives appended), printed in 1783 and which included much of the story of the Revolutionary War. Problem-free and still bright and fresh. The French admiral D’Estaing was a great friend of the American cause and was an important figure in 1779 - he disabled four British ships at the Battle of Grenada, led an unsuccessful siege against the British-occupied city of Savannah, GA, and he continually harangued the British at sea.
