c. 1850, Winfield Scott Engraving, Very Good. A 6.5" x 4.5" black and white steel engraving depicting a classical bust of Winfield Scott ("Aged 64") with his facsimile signature beneath. Engraved by H. B. Hall of New York; light scattered foxing. Scott ran as the Whig candidate for President in 1852. He had distinguished himself in the War of 1812; the hero of Lundy's Lane earned national recognition in the Mexican-American War, capturing Mexico City. Scott's service to this country has seldom been paralleled. Because of his advancing age, he spent most of the Civil War as Commandant at West Point. His battle plans, however, going into the conflict, are considered definitive strategies that would most likely have cut the War short. As detailed in the Dictionary of American Biography, "In his public career of nearly half a century he had been a main factor in ending two wars, in saving the country from several others, and in acquiring a large portion of its western territory." Known as "Fuss and Feathers" because of his love of dress, Scott was an "immensely strong man" standing six-foot-five inches. A fine tribute to this man.
