c. 1781, Print “The Landing of Captn. Cook, & c. at Erramanga, one of the New Hebrides", Choice Very Fine.
Overall size 9" x 14.5". Published in London by Alexander Hogg for use as an illustration in a book describing the voyages of English explorer Captain James Cook. A bit ragged on the lower edge, affecting a couple of the letters of Erramanga. A more appropriate title for this print would have been “The Departure...", as Cook’s men are clearly shoving off from the island amidst an onslaught from a large band of angry natives. Cook himself takes aim at a native with his rifle, while the man behind him reloads. A great, action-filled print that gives a good idea of the perils of exploring strange lands.
