Textiles
1876 Centennial Exhibition Cotton Bandanna, Philadelphia, PA, Choice Very Fine+.
Variant of No. 427 in “Threads of History" (see page 203), this one printed in burgundy only (instead of red, white, and black). 23” x 27” white cotton bandanna with burgundy printing imagery on one side of the “International Exhibition - Main Building”; the “Art Gallery” building; and the “Horticultural Building.” Interlocking patterns border each edge, and portraits of Washington and U.S. Grant adorn the corners. Commemorative seals are printed in the bottom corners, and three red stripes are stitched along the upper quadrant. The print runs off the top left corner by about a 1/4”, but is well-centered otherwise. Minor dampstaining and discoloration do not detract from the attractiveness of this piece, which is large and perfectly suitable for framing and display.
