c. 1824 Lafayette Commemorative Plaque (MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE). c. 1824, Likely to commemorate Lafayette’s historic return visit to America, 2” circumference, silver plated medallion, set inside a 4.5” x 4” black lacquered wooden plaque and covered by glass bubble and circular brass enclosure, Very Fine. This lovely, high relief medal features a profile of Lafayette on the obverse with “GENERAL” to the left and “LA FAYETTE” above and to the right. Verso of plaque has remnants of a printed description of La Fayette’s contributions to the American Revolution. Unfortunately, not enough of the description remains for us to ascertain the date or origin of this medallion. Glass bubble is broken in two places, and the verso of medallion is missing its backing, revealing brass or copper metal. Black lacquered wooden frame is weathered with small ridges in its surface, but the medallion itself is quite nice. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
