Bembe & Kimball 1857 U.S. House of Representatives Carved Oak Chair. Stenciled mark on inside of back seat rail "A. Bembe - A. Kimball, 928 Broadway New York". This chair and the matching desk selling in the next lot, were designed by Mr. Thomas Ustick Walter specifically for use in the newly remodeled United States Capitol Building House of Representatives in 1857. The chamber was again remodeled 16 years later and the desks and chairs removed. Some were sold including at least one to the eras prominent photographer, Matthew Brady. Brady photographed dozens of dignitaries and notable people in his Bembe & Kimball chair including President Abraham Lincoln who called it his favorite chair! The chair remains in very good condition. It has been reupholstered. 41" h x 23" w x 23" deep
