1769 Map of Chesapeake Bay & Engraving of the “Ibis”

December 1769, THE GENTLEMAN’S MAGAZINE, London, England, Choice Extremely Fine.
8” x 5,” 2-column layout, pp. 561-610. By Sylvanus Urban, “Printed for D. Henry at St. John’s Gate." Disbound, lacking covers, back page is separated from binding, but the pages are extremely crisp and clean. Features a map of “Chesopeak Bay” by Charles Mason & Jere. Dixon, and an engraving of the “Ibis”--a “very curious African bird.” Lots of wonderful articles as well: “Causes of the decay of learning”; a speech in Parliament on a motion to repeal the “Duty Acts affecting America”; and the “Quakers’ reasons for not keeping Christmas,” for example. A fascinating cross-section of news and perspectives, printed less than 10 years before the American Revolution.
